When we first know Linux the big question is, how can I work in windows network with sharing folder, browse Windows computer in the network. The Answer is “SAMBA”. In this tutorial I write very Simple Samba configuration so we can free join in Windows network as a work group.
In this tutorial I used Centos 3.0. Other distro should be working properly.
Verify that we have samba installed in your system
rpm -qa | grep samba
this will show all your samba version, if samba available on your system. Edit file
cd /etc/samba
su root
vi smb.conf
workgroup = <your workgroup name>
hosts allow = <your Ip Address> //this line mean who is you allow to access your samba server
security = user
[homes]
browseable = no
writeable = yes
// this is a user home share folder you can set the security with yes or no
<type esc>
<type :wq for save and quit>
now we already set the smb.conf file that 1 of samba configuration file, next you up samba services
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
now you can adding samba user (example agustin) but first you must make user in you linux
smbpasswd –a agustin
New SMB password: ********
Retype new SMB password:********
Enter the password in 8 character length or more, if you enabled the user name length specification, then it must meet the requirement. Note that agustin is an existing user in the system.
Note. If the command fails it is because the password file does not exist. Retouch the file with the following command and try again.
touch /etc/samba/smbpasswd
Finally change the smbpasswd security to 644
# chmod 644 smbpasswd
That command will make it read only, then restart smb service.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart
go to your gnome nautilus
in address bar smb:///
deng deng …..!!!!
We will see all workgroup computer on your Network
note:
This is very simple samba configurations, then how if we need to set samba as PDC, I will write tutorial with this Samba PDC subject in other session.
